Playing Jacks or Better Video Poker

To play Jacks or Better Poker you start out by placing your bet. Then, you’ll receive five cards. You can keep those cards or discard any or all of the cards as you attempt to build a winning hand. Winning hands include:

  • Royal Flush – Jacks or Better’s highest paying hand. A royal flush is 5 high-value cards that run in sequence and are of a matching suit (all clubs, all hearts, etc). As in most other poker variations, in Jacks or Better, the Royal Flush starts with a 10 and ends with an Ace.
  • Straight Flush – second to top highest paying hand. It is made up of five low-value cards of a similar suit (e.g. 5,6, 7, 8, and 9)
  • Four-of-a-Kind – four cards of the same number. Can be either high-value or low-value cards. i.e. four Jacks or four twos.
  • Full House –a pair plus three other cards of the same kind.....e.g. three sixes and two Queens
  • Four-to-a-Royal-Flush – four of the five cards needed for a Royal Flush. Whereas a Royal Flush would be a 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace of a specific suit, Four-to-a-Royal-Flush involves four of those 5 cards plus one random card (Jack, Queen, King and Ace of spades plus a seven)
  • Flush – this hand that contains five cards of an identical suit. There’s no requirement for consecutive-numbered cards. The suit needs to match
  • Three-of-a-kind – Three cards of the same number, different suits (i.e. an Eight of Hearts, Eight of Clubs and Eight of Diamonds)
  • Straight – five cards in sequential order. In a Straight, the suit doesn’t need to be the same for the five cards. (i.e. four of hearts, five of diamonds, six of clubs, seven of spades, and eight of diamonds)
  • Four-to-a-Straight-Flush – like Four-to-a-Royal-Flush, Four-to-a-Straight-Flush involves a hand that holds four of the five cards that you would need for a Straight Flush (i.e. six of diamonds, seven of clubs, eight of hearts and nine of spades plus one more random card, which gives you four of the five cards needed for a Straight Flush)
  • Two Pairs – two pairs of cards (e.g. a pair of fours and a pair of Kings)
  • Three-to-a-Royal-Flush – three of the cards that you would need to form a Royal Flush (Jack, Queen and King of Spades plus two random cards)
  • Four-to-a-Flush – four cards of the same suit
  • Three-to-a-Straight-Flush – three cards of the same suit
  • Three-to-a-Straight-Flush – a  hand with three cards that you would need to form a Straight Flush plus two random cards (i.e. eight, nine and ten of diamonds plus two random cards)
  • Two-to-a-Royal-Flush -- Two cards needed for a Royal Flush plus three random cards (i.e. Queen and King of Clubs plus three random cards)

Strategies for Winning at Jacks or Better Poker

If you’re focused on winning, you should study the poker strategy for Jacks or Better Poker in order to create more winning opportunities. Some of these strategies include:

  • If you have three-cards-to-a-Royal-Flush, hold onto them! Chances are that you can build on that hand. Similarly, if you have four cards to a Flush or a Straight, hold them and draw only one additional card.
  • Never break up a Full House, Four-of-a-Kind, Three-of-a-Kind, or Two Pairs.
  • Three-of-a-Kind, a Straight, a Flush, and a High Pair all outrank three to a Royal Flush. Therefore, play three-to-a-Royal-Flush when you have low-value hands (i.e. when you have four-to-a Flush).
  • Keep a Low Pair over four-to-a-Straight or three-to-a-Straight-Flush.
  • Keep a High Pair over four-to-a-Straight and four-to-a-Flush.
  • Keep a Straight, four-to-a-Flush or a High Pair if you have two-to-a-Royal-Flush.
  • If you have four-to-a-Royal-Flush, discard the fifth card even if that card gives you a Pair or a Flush.
  • Don’t ever break up a Straight or a Flush -- unless you’re only one card short of achieving a Royal Flush.
  • The only time to give up a High Pair is if you have four-cards-to-a-Royal-Flush or four-cards-to-a-Straight-Flush.
  • If your hand isn’t building towards any of the above hands, switch all your cards for new cards.
