Regardless of whether you’re a new dog owner or you’ve had a canine friend for a long time, there are some things that you may not know about how to care for a dog.

How to Choose Your Dog

There are many different dog breed including those who were once intended for specific tasks and those who were bred for companionship and even for show. Pit Bull Terriers, Beagles, Spaniels, Coonhounds, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers and hound dogs were bred as hunting dogs.  Schnauzers, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Rottweilers and German Shepherds were bred to protect their owners. Poodles and Pomeranians were bred as circus dogs. Today, many different breeds of dogs including Labradors, Retrievers, Great Danes, Border Collies and Boxers are trained to work as service dogs for people with disabilities.

When you’re looking for the dog that you want to bring home, be sure to get a breed that fits the type of lifestyle that the dog will be living. If you have children, stay away from small, high-strung breeds like Chihuahuas or Schnauzers because they may bite – with children around, a “Heinz 57” mutt is probably your best bet because the more of a mix, the better-tempered the dog will be. If you live in a small space, don’t choose a large dog. If you get upset about the thought of fur on your furnishings, don’t get a furry breed like a husky, a malamute or a chow.

Mutts are always great!

Food

Be careful not to overfeed Fido. While cats generally eat enough to fill up and no more, dogs will often keep eating endlessly. Feed your dog according to her weight. You can ask your vet for recommendations for the amount of food that you should be giving your pup. Wet food tends to have more fat content so you may want to give the hound half-wet and half-dry for a more balanced diet. Make sure that snacks are nutritionally sound and not full of fat.

Natural Cures

You don’t need to always take your pet to the vet. There are natural cures and treatments that can cure multiple canine conditions including:

  • Ticks – Repel ticks with rose geranium oil by dabbing a few drops on the dog’s collar at regular intervals throughout the month. By the way, this is not a good solution for cats because their skin is sensitive to this type of oil.
  • Fleas – Rub some citrus (lemon or orange juice or rinds) on your pet’s fur to repel fleas. After you rub, give the pup a good shower and try to submerge her underwater to drown the fleas. Stay away from cheap over-the-counter flea and tick treatments because they can be dangerous -- a flea/tick collar made by a reputable manufacturer is safest
  • Chocolate – Keep Fido and Fifi far away from chocolate. Chocolate is toxic for dogs. If your dog has somehow ingested a significant amount of chocolate, give hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting - one teaspoon to five pounds of body weight. Then, call your vet for further instructions.
  • Irritated Skin –  while you’re hugging your hound, you might notice that his skin seems irritated. If so, spray some chamomile tea or vitamin E oil on his fur to alleviate the irritated skin. If you notice that the poor guy is itching, apply fine oatmeal mixed with a little water to the affected area. You can do this in the bathtub. Leave the paste on for 10 minutes and then rinse it away
  • Pill – if your pup needs to swallow a pill, try sticking it in some yummy food so she can gulp it down with no problem. If Daisy eats the food and spits out the pill (some dogs are experts at this), grasp her upper jaw and open her mouth. Place the pill in as far back in her throat as you can and then hold her muzzle closed for a few seconds until she swallows.
  • Meds –  You can save on pet medications when you buy at a pharmacy. Both online and retail pharmacies sell the same drugs that your vet sells at a 10% to 20% discount. Never give human medications to an animal unless you’ve consulted a vet!
