Fantasy football tips for success

It’s still early enough in the Vegas casino football season for you to put together a great team and plan out your campaign for the 2019 season. Here are some tips for you to succeed:

Practice

To prepare for the flow the real draft and observe how other owners value players, you should draft once or twice a week. There’s a mock draft on NFL.com which allows you to review your options. If you’re in the Best Ball format you draft without making any additional roster moves. BB drafts are competitive and deep and offer a good way to learn the player pool and engage with experienced competitors. The highest scoring rostered players get statistical credit every week.

NFL Sources

Go right to the horse’s mouth for some insights that can give you an advantage.  Fantasy news is fine but for more in-depth coverage, check out NFL information outlets to get a big picture about what’s going on in the league.  Try NFL.com and the NFL network for a well-rounded overview about what’s happening league-wide. Pay attention to the analysts have to offer so that you can see the big picture.

Take What you Need

Even if you see a top player who hasn’t yet been snatched up, don’t grab him.  It’s best to add the right players to the right spots and cover all your bases.  And don’t rush – you can always find an adequate starter, even in the fifth or sixth round.

PreSeason

Don’t ignore the preseason fantasy news. Draft day is tense enough as it is, without going in unprepared. If you find that you’ve drafted an injured player or one that changed teams, it’s because you didn’t stay up to day with the news.

Separation

Don’t expect that you’ll be able to execute your picks in the order that you want. You have to adjust on the run.  Don’t expect that you’ll pick up your most important positions immediately.  It doesn’t always work like that. Instead, write down the next 10-12 players or queue up after every pick to get ready for the next round. When your next turn comes you’ll be able to take the next available top rated player.

Trading

Don’t get into trading during the draft.  It’s not the right time. It’s a temptation but it’s advisable to resist the temptation to trade draft slots or choices. You can draft successfully from any position and every draft slot has its own pros and cons. There’s also no need to load up on a position in order to trade players from that position away later.  Draft what and when you need.

Everyone loves their roster on Draft Day, but there is still a lot of work to be done. No one wins the league on Draft Day. Injuries, sleepers and busts, trades and waiver moves all change your outlook very quickly. Also, do not fret if you don’t like your initial draft or start the season slowly. Fantasy championships are not won in August.

Injuries

Daily fantasy football is heavily reliant on injury and news updates. During the games, you need to be at your computer right before the game to stay updated about injuries.  Check out the line-up to catch any scuttlebutt about possible injuries. Also, it’s a good idea to have a running back on call who can fill in when needed due to an injury.

Setting Line-ups

Don’t set your line-ups too soon. And even if you do set it early, be prepared to change it as needed. That means that you can’t just walk away from your team during the game and wait to see how things play out……things change before and during the game and you need to be ready to make changes as needed.

Sometimes the DFS lobby opens contests in advance. If the teams in your contest are playing another game, check out what happened to them during the game.  Did they get injured? Benched? That could affect the game that you’re getting ready to play. Stay on the ball. Reconsider all possible variables right up to game time.

Algorithms

When you create your DFS algorithm, include game lines, player props and the wisdom of the crowd.  Find at least three sources of projections  on rankings and data projections and add your own thoughts. Then average everything out and make your move. Be careful not to involve team bias in your calculations, even if you know one team well.

Variance

Don’t rely on statistical backing for your decisions. There is value in randomness. Prediction isn’t everything – how you leverage predictability is important.

Winning in DFS involves creating a unique line-up and combining it with well-educated luck. You make your own luck with your lineup choices along with good strategies.

Individual Strategies

Don't use the same strategies for every sport. Each sport should be considered its own and approached in different ways. You need to become an expert in each of the fantasy games that you play. Some games are more reliant on data algorithms and daily projections while others have more game-to-game variables. It’s important to watch some of the games but not for every sport (more important for football than baseball in gathering needed information to build teams).

Also, you need to consider how various strategies might alter approaches to various situations. You need to play the right way in the right game.

General Tips

  • You’ll find the biggest payouts, the most novice players and the most randomness in large-pool, guaranteed tournament play.
  • Take advantage of the free rolls. Whenever you can play for free, do so.  You get a taste of winning without taking any risks.
  • Consider a tournament competition. Tournament types include 50/50 pools where you set lineups with others and 50% of the competitors double their money (the rest lose their deposits), head-to-head competitions in which you compete against one person and, if you win, take his entry fee, and multipliers where you multiply your deposit – the higher the multiplier, the higher you need to finish to cash in.
